1. General information
-----------------------
Your name:
John Keniry
You live in (city & country):
Durham, UK
Your birthdate (or age):
36
Your occupation/job/studies:
I work for the Government.
Your hobbies:
Hill walking. Music (all types from medieval church music to jazz to
opera to rock). My current favourites are Portishead.
Anything you want to add here (about yourself):
2. DOOM-related information
-------------------------------
Your DOOM config (key bindings, controllers):
I only play dos versions of Doom and I disable vertical mouse movement
with the mouse.com command run from a batch file. If I want to move fwd and back then I have
keys :-) Controls used: Mouse with redefined keys:
\ strafe left, z back, x strafe right
lmouse button fire
rmouse button forward
mmouse strafe on
NB the \ key is to the left of the z on a UK keyboard. I should say that overall my config is
pretty suboptimal and anyone starting out should pick something better (for instance pick keys
closer to the weapon keys so you can touch type weapon changes more easily).
Size of DOOM directory on your HD:
Doom_se 43.2Mb, Doom2 110Mb
First contact to COMPET-N (when, how etc.):
Probably mid 1996. At first I just found this directory on
ftp.cdrom.com with all these weird files. I didn't know what lmps were but I downloaded a couple
anyway out of curiosity. Once I played them back I was amazed by what I saw. I decided then to
learn to play COMPET-N style, ie quickly and aggressively. I never uploaded very many lmps
to COMPET-N - so often I would get within seconds of the current record without being able to
beat it.
First COMPET-N demo:
Can't really remember. I think it may have been a -fast 100% kills
e2m9. Whatever, that one got beaten by Rini and then another try by me was beaten again by
Poeppy.
Favourite COMPET-N demo(s) from yourself (the one(s) that you're most proud of):
Ummm I uploaded an episode 1 nitemare run (ep1all.zip) which was the
first ever (AFAIK) to include e1m9. Thats probably the most taxing demo I've ever made. Nitemare
is very hard on your nerves, and multi-level recordings leave you feeling very drained. I made
a much better ep1 run without e1m9 but never gave it to COMPET-N because it was slower than the
existing ones. Overall I played ep1 nitemare for three weeks.
Favourite COMPET-N demo(s) from others:
The first demos to really impress me were Kai's e4m2 demos, especially
the one where he slashed 1.30 (or something) off the previous time. I thought that was just
amazing when I saw it because at the time I had difficulty just completing the level. I like
Daniel's -fast Plutonia 32 very much where he slaughters over 300 monsters in under 10 minutes.
I always liked to watch Anthe's nitemare demos and I think to this day he was the most stylish
player. But really there are too many to list, and I don't watch as many new lmps as I used to.
Favourite DOOM or DOOM2 map:
e1m3 (because of its extreme difficulty on nitemare), map14
(excellent design with lots of different route possibilities). My least favourite map is 24
(The Chasm).
Favourite TC/megawad:
Only play these on co-op. HR is great fun for co-op playing.
Do you like Quake?
Its ok. Quake2 was better, but I never played either of them that much
once I'd finished them. The big problem for me was that you only had monsters attacking in very
small groups, not in hordes the way they can in Doom.
What do you think of DOOM now?
Its not as pretty as some of the newer games, but as a single player
game its still unsurpassed in terms of excitement and atmosphere.
Anything you want to add here:
John is a neat Nightmare and Maxkills player, some of his demos are really fun to watch. His
Episode1 Nightmare run incl. E1M9 is just great, and still the only one I know of. Also, he
recorded E1M3-NM with 100% secrets, one feat not many are capable of. Most of his great demos
were done on Episodes 1 and 4.
