When I try playing back demos for these levels with timer.exe, it usually crashes as these levels seem to be too large. Is there any way of avoiding this (i.e. like the -maxdemo parameter for recording demos)?

Does av20 crash? If so, then it might be the level size, but I'm not sure myself about that...

Is timer.exe based on DosDooM? I know if I'm running hi-res & hi-color, some levels(many not very large) will crash, so it may just need more memory on large levels. Try adding "-heapsize 16" to your command line...
